The county's principal town, Tappahannock, dates back to a 17th century port settlement. The historic cities of Fredericksburg (40 miles north) and Williamsburg (56 miles SE) are within an hour's drive. ​

  • Marsh Street Pool Opening Is Delayed

    05/26/2022 - The Marsh Street pool will not open on Memorial Day weekend due to mechanical issues. Opening will delayed until further notice. 

  • Notice of a Public Meeting of the Planning Commission

    05/20/2022 - In accordance with Section 2.2-3707 of the Code of Virginia, 1950, as amended, notice is hereby given that the Essex County Planning Commission will meet on Tuesday, June 7, 2022, at 4:00 pm in Suite 202, County Administration Building, 202 South Church Lane, Tappahannock, Va. The purpose of this meeting is to consider the following: Discuss the County Comprehensive Plan. 

  • Notice to Essex County Citizens and Taxpayers - Tax Bills

    05/19/2022 - Real estate and personal property tax bills that are usually due on June 5th will be mailed out later than normal. The FY22-23 budget, tax rates and due date are scheduled to be adopted on June 1, 2022. Therefore, bills will be mailed shortly thereafter, with a due date in July. 

  • Public Hearing For Proposed Fiscal Year 2022-23 Budget and Tax Rates

    05/13/2022 - Pursuant to Sections 15.2-2506 and 58.1-3007, Code of Virginia (1950), as amended, the Essex County Board of Supervisors will hold a Public Hearing on the proposed Budget for Fiscal Year 2022-2023 at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 25, 2022 in the Board Meeting Room of the Essex County School Board Office Building, 109 N. Cross Street, Tappahannock, Virginia 22560.
