ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN ESSEX COUNTY
A PROFILE OF A SUCCESSFUL VENTUREWal-Mart Store # 1730

Link to Wal-Mart Web Site
Wal-Mart became a member of the community in 1991 with the opening of a Wal-Mart Discount Store. Due to the support by local residents, the store was expanded in 1996 to a Supercenter which offers general merchandise and grocery items.
Wal-Mart's decision to select Tappahannock is based solidly on the prospering demographics and market economics of the area. Site selection was made that much easier by reasonable land prices, ease of access and the welcoming and helpful nature of the local government officials. Tappahannock is the natural hub for both the Northern Neck and most of the Middle Peninsula providing access to a population of approximately 80,000 in under one hour's driving distance. In a typical week the SuperCenter averages 30,000 or more customers, peaking to 42,000 in the Holiday weeks.
We've enjoyed being in Tappahannock for seven years and are looking forward to serving this community for many years to come. Wal-Mart is more than just a business in the communities in which we operate. Wal-Mart associates live and work in the communities. We also look forward to expanding our support to local organizations through our matching grant and donation programs.
There are currently 284 associates employed at the store in both part- and full-time positions. The workforce reflects the surrounding market in that Wal-Mart employs members from all socio-economic groups.
We have a wonderful relationship with the Chamber and they have been extremely supportive in our seven years in the market. The small town atmosphere and culture we've found is ideally what Sam Walton would have envisioned. Our working relationship with the Chamber is directly in line with our corporate beliefs: Respect for the Individual - which is shown through individual and community needs; Service to Our Customers - both residents and businesses; and Strive for Excellence, - striving to make the town and county an excellent place to live, work and play.
The County offers business developers and investors a wide selection of sites available for building and improvement along with several existing buildings, shops and office centers ready for immediate occupation.
