The Essex Inn
The Essex Inn is Tappahannock's most elegant "Country Inn" accommodation and is located at the corner of Water Lane and Duke Street, only a few steps from the St. Margaret's campus and ideal for visiting parents and families. The Roane-Wright-Trible House as it is also known, is a brick Georgian mansion built about 1850 by Dr. Lawrence Roane and an excellent example of Greek revival architecture. The Inn has been carefully and authentically restored to its original grandeur and offers guests southern hospitality and casual yet elegant accommodation in a historic setting. Nestled in the heart of Tappahannock's downtown historic district, guests can walk to several local restaurants, the Rappahannock River which is one block from the house, and many of the area's renown antique stores. Day trips to the many historic attractions in the area include Fredericksburg, Williamsburg, Richmond, Civil War battle sites, and several wineries. Boat trips, marinas, and a host of other recreational activities are also available in the vicinity.
The Inn had been furnished with period antiques, reproductions, and family heirlooms which include a working Victrola, baby grand piano and 150-year-old brass bed. The four bedrooms in the Main House all feature four-posted beds (some queen, some king) custom made from wood salvaged from piers made of 300-year-old Cyprus trees and have their own private en suite bathrooms, working gas fireplaces, cable TV and their own individual temperature control.
The "Quarters" is a separate building that was once the servants' quarters. It features 4 suites that can sleep up to 3 guests each. Each suite has a living room, bedroom, full kitchen, and bathroom. Two of the suites have gas fireplaces. A full three-course gourmet breakfast is served in the breakfast room. Guests have full access to The Butler's pantry, which includes a beer tap, refrigerator, microwave and a full array of snacks. A screened in porch and a private brick courtyard provide outdoor relaxation and smoking facilities.
Room rates range from $125 to $150. The Inn can also be rented for Private Dinners, Small weddings and receptions - the dining room seats up to 35 guests. For further information, online availability and reservations, specials and photos of the inn, please visit the website at www.EssexInnVa.com
The Essex Inn recently added a special weekend package Weekend with a Writer and features a series of workshop events, each inviting a different professional author to visit Tappahannock and share their experience and wisdom with a workshop group. We have some fairly well known authors scheduled including David L. Robbins, Alan Pell Crawford and Dean King. Tickets and packages available from the Essex County Public Library and from the Essex Inn.
