Located on Virginia's Middle Peninsula, Essex County is centrally situated just outside the Washington to Norfolk urban crescent.

The county's principal town, Tappahannock, dates back to a 17th century port settlement. The historic cities of Fredericksburg (40 miles north) and Williamsburg (56 miles SE) are within an hour's drive. ​

    05/22/2019 - It has come to our attention that Essex County secondary roads are in a state requiring serious debris cleanup efforts. All interested citizens and stakeholders will be meeting Tuesday, May 28 2PM to coordinate comprehensive cleanup of Essex County roads, at the Essex County Administrative office, 202 S. Church Lane, Tappahannock VA.
